OUR COMMITMENT TO CALIFORNIA Keeping our communities safe from wildfires To Our Southern California Edison Community During the week of Oct. 27, ferocious Santa Ana winds prompted the National Weather Service to issue an unprecedented "extreme red flag warning for much of Southern Calfornia. These strong Santa Anas lived up to their promise, fanning the fames of many fires over several days To the firefighters and first responders who worked around the clock in the most dangerous of conditions to save our communities-thank you. To our neighbors who helped each other evacuate safely and who opened your doors to strangers-thank you Since july, and increasingly in the last several weeks, we have exercised Public Safety Power Shutofts (PSPS) toreduce the risk that our electric equipment starts a fee. While we recegnize these shutofts area signicant hardship for you, our customers, they serve a vital purpose. In fact patrols conducted after PSPS events found several instances of equipment damage and tree branches contacting power lines which could have ignited a fire For years, we have been investing in a smarter, stronger grid Since 2008, we have invested about $27 billon to maintain, upgrade and modernize our electric system with state of the art technology that improves reliabilty and resilency while ao contrbusing to reducing wilofire nk and meeting our customers fueture needs. This includes automated switches and other er equipment which can isolace sections of our circuits in re risk areas to reduce the number of customers affected We also have remote-controlled automatic devices that stop affected circuits from automatically re-energizing so SCE crews can physicaly inspect thes ines before they are re energized. Climate change and the increasing number of people living in high fire rik areas however, mean we need to accelerate that work in some areas sCE remains focused on implementing our Wilafire Mitigabon Plan and our Grid Safety and Resilency Program to further harden our infrastructure, bolster our situational awareness capabilities and enhance our operational practices Over the past 13 monchs, we have deployed 470 of our planned 850 weather stations to monitor temperature, wind speeds and humidity levels, and more than 130 of our planned 160 highdefinition cameras to more quickly desect fe ignitions We have installed the first 300 miles of insulated wires, with plans to replace nearly 1,000 miles by the end of 2020 and to install about 4900 additional miles between 2021 and 2023; and We have installed fast-acting fuses at approximately 10.000 new locations, with plans to upgrade thousands more. These efforts are designed to reduce the chance of catastrophic wildfires. With our work on weather stations, weather modeling more granular risk models and observations from the field, we can be more targeted in applying PSPS. That means we expect to reduce the need for these shutoffs We recognize that sCE has an important role to play in keeping our communities safe, yet our collective safety requires the combined efforts of our partners. We are grateul for our state leaders commitment to increase the number of firefighters, aircraft, engines and tools available to combat fires quickly. The difficult events of the past few weeks might well have been even more tragic without their action We appreciate the dose coordination and collaboration we have with state and county Offices of Emergency Services which help to identify vuinerable customers and cribical service providers. We also are grateful for the women and men of SCE-many ably represerted by s0EW Local 47-who work tirelessily to keep our communities safe and to make our system strong To our dedicated employees- thank you At SCt.safety is our most important value, and we will continue to do what is needed to operate the electric system sadely and relably Pedroj.
