OUR COMMITMENT TO CALIFORNIA Keeping our communities safe from wildfires To Our Southern Califernia Edisen Community During the week of Oct. 27, ferocious Santa Ana winds prompted the National Weather Service too issue an unprecedented "extreme red flag warning for much of Southern California Those strong Santa Anas lived up to their promise, fanning the flames of many fres over several days To the firefighters and first responders who worked around the clock in the most dangerous of conditions to save our communitses-thank you. To our neighbors who helped each other evacuate safely and who opened your doors to serangers-thank you Since july, and increasingy in the last several weeks, we have exercised Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) to reduce the risk that our electric equipment starts a fire. While we recognize these shutofs are a significant hardship for you, our customers, they serve a vital purpose. In fact, patrols conducted after PSPS events found several instances of equipment damage and tree branches contacting power lines which could have ignited a ire For years, we have been investing in a smarter, stronger grid. Since 2008, we have invested about $27 bilon to maintain, upgrade and modernice our electric system with state of-the-art technology that improves relabty and reseny whde aso coneributing to reducing wildire risk and meeting our customers future needs This includes automated switches and other equipment which can isolace sections of our circuits in high fire risk areas to reduce the number of oustomers affected. We also have remote-controlled automatic devices that stop affected circuits from automaticaly re-energiting so SCE crews can physicalily inspect the ines before they are re-energized. Climate change and the increasing number of people living in high fire risk areas, however, mean we need to accelerate that work in some areas sCE remains focused on implementing our Wiatire Mitigation Plan and our Grid Safety and Resilency Program to further harden our infrastructure. bolster our situtional awareness capabilities and enhance our operational practices Over the past 13 months, we have deployed 470 of our planned 850 weather stations to monitor temperature, wind speeds and humidity levels, and more than 130 of our planned 160 high-definition cameras to more quickly decect fire ignitions We have installed the first 300 miles of insuiated wires, with plans to replace nearly 1,000 mles by the end of 2020 and to install about 4900 additional miles between 2021 and 2023; and We have installed fast-acting fuses at approximately 10.000 new locations, with plans to upgrade thousands more These efforts are designed to reduce the chance of catastrophic wildfires. with our work on weather stations, weather modeling, more granular rok models and observations from the fleld, we can be more targeted in applying PSPS That means we expect to reduce the need for these shueoffs We recognize that SCE has an important role to play in keeping our communities safe. yet our collectoive safety requires the combined efforts of our partners. We are grateful for our state leaders commitment to increase the number of firefighters, aircraft, engines and tools available to combat fires quickly The difficut events of the past few weeks might wel have been even more tragic without their action We appreciate the dose coordination and collaboration we have with state and county Offices of Emergency Services, which help to identily vulnerable customers and critical service providers. We also are grateful for the women and men of SCE-many ably represented by i8EW Local 47-who work tirelessly to keep our communbes safe and to make our system strong To our dedicated employees-thank you At SCL safety is our most important value, and we will continue to do what is needed to operate the electric system safely and reliably PedroJ Pirarro President and CEO of Edison intemotion the parent company of Southern Colfomio Edison SOUHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON An EDISON INTERNATIONAL Company OUR COMMITMENT TO CALIFORNIA Keeping our communities safe from wildfires To Our Southern Califernia Edisen Community During the week of Oct.
