KAISER PERMANENTE Standing Up for Our Patients and Employees It is disappointing and disheartening that once again, the leadership of the National Union Healthcare Workers is calling on our mental health therapists to walk away from their patients. We have been bargaining with the union for nearly a year, and in the last few weeks have made great progress toward an agreement. We've heard concerns from our therapists regarding the dramatic increase in mental health care demand, so we presented a comprehensive offer that addresses these concerns, including staffing and workload. We are also mmitted to Kaiser Permanente therapists remaining among the highest paid in California Unfortunately, the union leadership has decided to call an open-ended strike starting Tuesday June 11. This strike threat does not make sense, given what has been accomplished at the bargaining table. It is deeply disturbing that the union leadership would be so willing to sacrifice the needs of our patients as bargaining chips. In addition, we have a combination of business initiatives we are launching that will help increase the number of people working in the mental health professions, help our experts conduct research to advance care, and continue to- create new and improved clinical space to deliver care. These initiatives include Market Leading Compensation. Our bargaining proposal includes pay increases and lump-sum payments, $5,000 performance bonuses, $10,000 - $20,000 student loan repayment, and many other benefits that ensure Kaiser Permanente mental health professionals continue to receive market-leading compensation. Across California, the majority of Kaiser Permanente psychologists earn at least $135,000 or more, and social workers at least $109,.000 or more. Under our offer, therapists could receive an additional $35,000 to $49,000 in pay over 3 years. Adding More Resources. We have increased the number of therapists by over 30 percent since 2015, in spite of a national shortage, and we acknowledge that demand has continued to escalate. We have put on the table additional ways to address staffing which will make a meaningful, immediate improvement to meet the growing demand. Designing the Future of Care. We've also proposed creating an intensive workgroup of therapists and management to advance innovation and evidence based practice in our model of care. We believe as do our therapists that the dramatic increase in mental health care demand cannot be fully met without changes in the way mental health services are provided. Additional therapists will be added, based on the outcome of this group's work In addition, we are taking action to help our therapists obtain advanced clinical degrees, help recruit and attract new therapists to Kaiser Permanente, encourage our therapists to conduct research to advance care, and continue to expand access through more and better care facilities. These actions include: Significant financial support $30 million statewide for our therapists to pursue advanced degrees in mental health professions Providing $10 million statewide to create post-graduate fellowship and residency programs in our facilities, to attract students with the ultimate goal of employment at Kaiser Permanente. Committing $6 million statewide to fund our therapists engagement in clinical research to further develop evidence- based treatment and outcomes. Providing $10 million in charitable grants to colleges and universities to expand capacity in degree programs, with an emphasis in graduating bilingual and/or diverse students that reflect community needs. Accelerated building/improving mental health facilities, with the goal of making mental health care more available and improving access in environments that offer our patients convenience, comfort and privacy. Kaiser Permanente is in the midst of a seven year, $700 million project to expand and enhance our mental health care treatment facilities. We are absolutely committed to our mental health professionals' success, and have a deep appreciation for the essential care they provide our patients and members every day. We are asking our therapists not to follow the union's demand that they walk away from patients. We trust that when the time comes, our dedicated colleagues will be there for their patients KAISER PERMANENTE Standing Up for Our Patients and Employees It is disappointing and disheartening that once again, the leadership of the National Union Healthcare Workers is calling on our mental health therapists to walk away from their patients.
