The Rt. Reverend Mark Joseph Lawrence Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina (Retired) A fifth generation Califomian, Mark Lawrence was born in Bakersfield in 1950 where he attended local public schools including BHS (where he and the wrestling team won the Valley Championship in 1968-Go Drillers), BC, and CSUB. Mark became a follower of Jesus Christ in 1971 after several dramatic encounters with the Holy Spirit. He graduated from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry (M. Div. 1980). Mark has ministered in a wide variety of congregational settings- suburban church plans, rural congregation, inner city church. and downtown parish in California and Pennsylvania. In 2007, he was elected and in January 2008 was consecrated as the 14th Bishop of the Diocese of the South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He retired as diocesan bishop in March 2022. He is a frequent speaker and has also published articles on devotional and ecclesial concerns in various periodicals. Currently, Mark serves as interim Director and founding Chairman of the Anglican Leadership Institute (ALI). ALI's mission is to identify and equip emerging leaders to help shape the worldwide church in the 21st Century, "Making Biblical Anglicans for a Global Age. Mark and his wife Allison will celebrate (God willing) their 50th wedding anniversary and ministry together in September of this year. They have 5 married adult children and 18 grandchildren all of whom are walking with the Lord and serving. Mark enjoys reading on various subjects and is an avid backpacker and hiker. He also enjoys kayaking and canoeing the swamps and the Blackwater Rivers of South Carolina. All of which take the form of praise, adoration, and prayer.
